The successful rescue operation, which culminated in the reunion of the baby with its mother, has prompted the government to pledge stronger safeguards and the deployment of social workers in health facilities to prevent future incidents.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, confirmed the infant’s safe return during a visit to the clinic, expressing gratitude to the swift action of law enforcement and the public.

“This morning, the good news is that we have found the baby by the grace of God,” Minister Lartey stated.

“We want to say a big thank you to the whistleblower. We also want to say a big thank you to the police that they’ve been able to work to get the baby reconciled to the mother, or united with the mother today.”

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, February 18, triggered an immediate response from the Ghana Police Service after hospital authorities and the child’s family filed a report detailing the infant’s disappearance from the facility located in the Ablekuma South constituency.

Swift Police Action and Arrest

Police promptly launched a search operation, culminating in the baby’s recovery within a short period.

Authorities confirmed that they have arrested a female suspect, who is currently in police custody.

Investigations are ongoing to establish how the suspect allegedly gained access to the baby and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

While authorities have yet to publicly disclose the full identity of the suspect, investigators are diligently working to piece together the events that led to the alleged abduction.

The police have assured the public that the investigation will be thorough to ensure justice is served.

Community and Political Support

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, played a crucial coordinating role between the police, community members, and the distressed family.

He accompanied officials to the Mamprobi Polyclinic to ensure the infant was safely reunited with the mother—a move that highlighted the collective community effort to resolve the crisis.

Upon the baby’s return, medical personnel at the facility immediately examined the infant.

Doctors have since confirmed that the infant is stable, receiving treatment, and under close observation as a precautionary measure. This careful monitoring prioritizes the child’s health and well-being following the traumatic event.

Strengthening Institutional Systems

Beyond the immediate joy of the baby’s safe return, Minister Lartey emphasized that the incident serves as a critical wake-up call for healthcare institutions across the country.

She stressed that the matter would not end with the child’s recovery. Instead, it would lead to concrete follow-up measures to protect mothers and infants.

The Minister indicated that her ministry is looking beyond the criminal investigation. The goal, she said, is to strengthen institutional systems and reduce the risk of similar cases in the future.

This includes the deployment of social workers to hospitals to help monitor and safeguard vulnerable newborns.

“We are looking at what we can do to minimize or completely get rid of such baby cases or incidents in the hospitals,” the Minister said, underscoring the need for proactive measures.

The Minister announced a series of proposed safeguards. These will include enhancing security protocols within maternity wards. Authorities will also improve the monitoring of visitors.

Additionally, the plan involves integrating social welfare officers. These officers will assist in identifying potential risks and supporting new mothers during their hospital stay.

Stolen Baby – Call for Public Vigilance

The incident at Mamprobi Polyclinic highlights the ongoing need for vigilance both from hospital staff and the families of patients.

Authorities have encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities within health facilities immediately to security services.

As the investigation continues, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public of their commitment to ensuring safety. They have pledged to protect all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.

Meanwhile, the community and the family of the recovered infant are beginning the process of healing. They remain grateful for the positive outcome. They are also hopeful that the proposed measures will prevent such an ordeal from happening to another family.
