Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police announced on July 4.

The 32-year-old Ghanaian international, whose £45.3 million transfer from Atletico Madrid in 2020 made him one of Arsenal’s key signings, is accused of offenses against three separate women between 2021 and 2022. The charges include two counts of rape against one woman, three counts involving a second woman, and a sexual assault charge related to a third.

Partey, who left Arsenal when his contract expired on June 30, has strongly denied all allegations through his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman & Rose. “Thomas Partey denies all charges against him and has fully cooperated with police throughout their three-year investigation,” Wiltshire stated. “He welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.” The case first came to light in February 2022 when authorities received an initial report, leading to Partey’s arrest five months later. Despite the investigation, he continued playing for Arsenal without being publicly named as a suspect at the time.

Arsenal FC confirmed Partey’s departure in a brief statement, noting they could not comment further due to ongoing legal proceedings. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, emphasized the importance of supporting the alleged victims: “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.” Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to contact the Metropolitan Police’s specialist team via email.

During his four-year stint at Arsenal, Partey made 130 Premier League appearances, scoring nine goals, though his time was frequently interrupted by injuries. Last season, he played 35 league matches, helping the club secure a second-place finish, and featured in 12 Champions League games as Arsenal reached the semi-finals. Internationally, he has earned over 50 caps for Ghana, most recently playing in World Cup qualifiers in March 2024.

Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5 to face the charges. The case has sent shockwaves through the football world, casting a shadow over what had been a successful career for the midfielder. As the legal process unfolds, all eyes will be on the proceedings, with Partey maintaining his innocence while authorities pursue justice for the accusers. The Metropolitan Police continue to appeal for information from anyone affected by or knowledgeable about the case.
