John Jinapor, on Tuesday 7th January 2025, revealed the disturbing state of the country’s energy sector.
He stated emphatically that the country had fuel for electricity that could last only for about 5 hours. Stating further, he opined that the maximum number of days left may be just about two days. Anything beyond the two days, the country will be plunged into total darkness.
Truthfully or coincidentally, residents in some parts of Adentan in Accra have complained about blackout.
Hon John Jinapor, speaking to Joy News also espoused that even if Ghana should buy crude to power its generators, it would take 8 weeks to restore power.
President Mahama after his inauguration, has also spoken about the matter. The President acknowledged the energy challenge but said the country has the expertise to deal with the problem.
He said “There are a few surprises that have come up in respect of the energy sector, in respect of some aspects of governments decisions and things over the last seven years. But I think that Ghana has the human resources to be able to deal with the situation and turn things around as quickly as possible,”
Amidst all this confusion, GRIDCO has also stated that the country needs about $90 million to purchase oil to power Ghana’s generators.
The GRID company also stated that due to the West Africa Gas Pipeline’s inability to produce natural gas, the other alternative is to procure liquid fuel to power the generators. Anything short of this will result in Dumsor.
