On January 6th, 2025, Ghana’s 8th parliament of the Fourth Republic comes to an end. Right after it comes to an end, the 9th parliament will commence.
The 8th parliament will officially conclude all outstanding businesses today 6th January before the 9th parliament begins. The Speaker of parliament Hon Alban Bagbin who has been recommended for nomination as leader again to the 9th parliament will conclude proceedings of the 8th parliament.
Right after the conclusion of proceedings, newly elected MPs will be ushered into the new parliament. The members that make up the new parliament will then be sworn in.
Before Rt Honorable Speaker Alban Bagbin takes over again, he would have to be re-elected by the members of the 9th parliament to begin his second term. The Clerk to Parliament will chair and supervise the election of the speaker.
The beginning of the 8th parliament in 2021 was marked by a lot of confusion and instability. The instability began right at the beginning of electing the speaker of parliament. The atmosphere in parliament became so intense that some military personnel had to be called into the house in an attempt to maintain order.
Perhaps the politically charged atmosphere in 2021 was due to the balanced number of MPs on both sides, 137, 137.
With the NDC having the overwhelming majority this time, there is prediction for no resistance or standoff in the 9th parliament.
