PRETAG Cautions Members Against Examination Malpractice

Association Warns Teachers to Uphold Exam Integrity

The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has issued a strong caution to its members against engaging in examination malpractice.

Examination Malpractice

The association stressed that teachers have a vital role to play in protecting the credibility of the country’s educational system.

According to PRETAG, reports from the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) and recent media footage show that malpractice during examinations has become widespread. The group described this trend as worrying and damaging to Ghana’s educational standards.

Specific Malpractice Acts Identified

In its statement dated September 9, 2025, PRETAG condemned all practices that compromise the fairness of examinations. The association highlighted key areas of concern, including :

Examination Malpractice

  • The leaking of examination questions before scheduled papers.
  • The tampering of examination mater
  • Any act that impugns the professional integrity of teachers and invigilators.

By outlining these examples, PRETAG reminded teachers that their conduct directly affects how students and the public perceive the education system. The association insisted that malpractice erodes trust, reduces fairness, and threatens the future of quality education in the country.

Teachers’ Sacred Duty in Education

PRETAG emphasized that educators carry a sacred duty to safeguard examination integrity. Teachers, the group noted, are role models whose actions influence students’ behavior and discipline.

The statement warned that any involvement in malpractice does not only harm the system but also carries dire personal and professional consequences.

“Members must know that engaging in such practices has a dire consequence on our personal and professional integrity,” the release stated.

This reminder reinforces the idea that the fight against malpractice is not only about protecting students but also about preserving the image and dignity of the teaching profession.

Stakeholders Must Think Creatively

Beyond cautioning its members, PRETAG  also called on education stakeholders to adopt innovative approaches in addressing the challenge. The group suggested that all actors — from policymakers to parents — must work together to ensure malpractice is minimized.

“Stakeholders must think outside the box if examination malpractice is to be at the lowest ebb,” the association explained.

The group pointed out that collaborative efforts, strict monitoring, and consistent public education are necessary to curb the canker. In addition, PRETAG called for the adoption of modern security systems to safeguard exam materials.

Commitment To Collaboration

The association reaffirmed its commitment to uphold professional standards and to collaborate with all relevant institutions in the education sector. By working closely with WAEC, the Ministry of Education, and other partners, PRETAG believes Ghana can restore confidence in its examinations.

The statement concluded by assuring the public that PRETAG remains dedicated to promoting discipline, fairness, and quality in education. It was signed by Kingsley Anyimadu, Communication Director of the association.
