Thirteen Thousand Ghanaians Flee to Côte d’Ivoire
13000 Ghanaians Flee – The Ghana land dispute conflict in Savannah Region has led to a massive displacement of people. Over 13,000 Ghanaians have fled to neighboring Côte d’Ivoire. The conflict has resulted in 31 reported deaths and affected around 48,000 people.
A Government official disclosed this in an interview with Joy News. Minister for the Interior Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka stated that a land dispute in Gbinyiri forced the mass exodus. The conflict compelled these citizens to seek refuge in neighboring Côte d’Ivoire

Causes of the Conflict
The cause of the conflict stems from land dispute in the Gbinyiri area. Clashes over land at Gbiniyiri in the Savannah Region forced thousands of residents to cross into neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire. Speaking in a radio interview with Joy FM on Thursday morning, [September 4, 2025], Hon. Muntaka said that both Ghanaian and Ivorian authorities had verified the figure.
He noted, “The exact number which authorities in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire confirmed is 13,253 displaced people who are now there.” The violence, which started on Sunday, August 24, has killed 31 people and displaced thousands across about 12 communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District. Meanwhile, the government has deployed over 700 personnel to maintain peace and order”, he added
Government Response
The government and international partners are providing essential services like food, shelter, and medical care to displaced persons. They are also working to reunite families and provide emotional support. The National Peace Council of Ghana is collaborating with traditional leaders to restore peace and stability. Following this, a committee has been set up to investigate the dispute and recommend solutions.
The minister said government is engaging traditional leaders and the Peace Council to restore calm. He stated, “This morning, the delegation of the Gonjaland leadership with the peace council is meeting the Yagbonwura. I am very optimistic about our progress. We will hopefully set up a committee by tomorrow or at least by Monday to investigate all of this. The committee will then produce a report on how best we can prevent this from recurring.” He added that authorities are considering allowing displaced families to return home soon, once security forces ensure conditions are safe.
Conclusion
The Ghana conflict has caused a significant humanitarian crisis. However, Minister for Interior says authorities are working tirelessly with all other traditional authorities to restore normalcy. The government and international community are also working together to address the root causes and provide support. With continued efforts, it’s possible to rebuild and recover.
