The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released its schedule for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which will run from June 11 to June 18.

A total of 603,328 school candidates—297,250 males and 306,078 females from 20,395 schools—have registered, marking a 5.99% increase from 2024. Additionally, 1,661 private candidates (858 males and 803 females) will sit for the exams, representing a 19.49% rise from the previous year. The examinations will be held at 2,237 centers nationwide for school candidates, while private candidates will take theirs at 15 regional centers. Notably, this will be the final year private candidates are examined on the old syllabus, as WAEC transitions fully to the core curriculum.

WAEC has emphasized its commitment to inclusivity, ensuring candidates with special educational needs receive the necessary accommodations. The Council reassured parents, guardians, and school heads that all arrangements are in place to guarantee no candidate is disadvantaged. Additionally, WAEC highlighted its revised Rules and Regulations for handling examination irregularities, which have been in effect since 2023. Key updates include stricter penalties for body or clothing inscriptions, posting live questions online, denying access to school premises, misconduct by officials, and multiple registrations. These rules are accessible on WAEC’s website, and schools are urged to enforce compliance.

The Council called on all stakeholders, including invigilators, supervisors, and the public, to maintain order and integrity during the examinations. Candidates were reminded to adhere strictly to the rules, as any breaches could result in severe consequences. WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, J. K. Kapi, reiterated the importance of fairness and transparency in the examination process, urging collective efforts to uphold the credibility of the BECE.

As the exams approach, WAEC wishes all candidates success while reminding them of the critical role honesty and discipline play in their academic journeys. The Council’s meticulous preparations and clear guidelines aim to ensure a smooth and credible examination process, reinforcing its commitment to educational excellence in West Africa.
