Starting today, nationals from 12 countries—including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen—are barred from entering the United States under a new Trump administration executive order that took effect at 12:01 a.m. ET.

The policy also imposes significant visa restrictions on travelers from seven additional nations: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. The ban, which primarily targets African and Middle Eastern countries, revives a contentious immigration policy from Trump’s first term, which was swiftly reversed by President Joe Biden in 2021.

President Donald Trump has defended the measure as a critical step to safeguard national security and prevent terrorism on U.S. soil. “We cannot risk the safety of Americans by allowing unchecked entry from regions with high threats,” Trump stated. However, critics argue that the ban unfairly targets Muslim-majority nations and echoes the discriminatory rhetoric of his previous administration. The original 2017 travel ban sparked widespread protests, legal challenges, and accusations of Islamophobia before being upheld by the Supreme Court in a narrow ruling.

The reinstatement of the travel ban fulfills a key campaign promise from Trump, who vowed to tighten U.S. borders if re-elected. Immigrant rights groups and Democratic lawmakers have condemned the move, calling it an unnecessary and xenophobic policy that separates families and stifles international relations. As the ban takes effect, its long-term impact on U.S. immigration, foreign policy, and global perceptions of America remains uncertain—but the debate over security versus inclusivity is once again at the forefront of national discourse.
