Tragic Microlight Crash Kills Two Near Tema School, Children Evacuate Safely
A peaceful Monday afternoon turned into a scene of horror in Tema Community One. A microlight aircraft plummeted from the sky and burst into flames near a school park, killing both people on board instantly.

Emergency services confirmed the tragic outcome shortly after arriving at the scene. The aircraft crashed near the Oninku Drive School Park at Site 17, sending thick, dark smoke billowing into the air.
The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) quickly issued a statement identifying the aircraft. The microlight, registered as 9G-ADV, was flying from Ho to Accra when disaster struck.
Last radio contact with the pilot occurred at approximately 14:18 Zulu time. This was just after 2:00 pm local time, and the aircraft never made its estimated arrival.
Emergency Response By Authorities
“We received a call around 12:59 that there was an outbreak of fire,” explained Divisional Officer II Ebenezer Yenzu. He serves as the Tema Regional PRO for the Ghana National Fire Service.
Responders rushed to the TMA Daycare facility, only to find a horrifying scene. “We realised that there was a blazing fire involving a chopper that had fallen just close to the wall of the pre-school,” Mr Yenzu told journalists.
Miraculously, the quick thinking of school staff prevented a greater catastrophe. Teachers and pupils had already evacuated the school compound by the time help arrived.
They gathered safely on the street, watching the inferno from a distance. “None of the students or the pupils or the teachers got injured,” Mr Yenzu confirmed with relief.
Firefighters from the GNFS and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority launched a joint operation. They worked tirelessly to douse the flames and secure the surrounding area.
“Our men from our end and GHAPOHA tried to douse the fire,” Mr Yenzu stated. They also moved quickly to cordon off the area to protect local residents.
After extinguishing the blaze, responders made the grim discovery. They found the bodies of two males within the twisted wreckage of the aircraft.
“We’ve been able to retrieve the bodies and sent them to the morgue,” the fire officer confirmed. The police will oversee preservation and conduct autopsies to aid the investigation.

Officials have positively identified the aircraft by its registration number, 9G-ADV. However, many critical questions about the crash remain unanswered.
“As to where it is coming from and the cause of the accident, we are still investigating it,” Mr Yenzu said. Security personnel have now cordoned off the entire crash site.
Aviation experts are expected to assist in determining the cause of this tragedy. The Assembly Member for the Kwesi Plange Electoral Area, Ahmed Abdullia, also praised the school’s swift evacuation.
The GCAA, Ghana’s regulatory agency for air transport since 1986, promises to release further details soon. The investigation is in its early stages, and authorities are appealing for any information.
Understanding Microlight Aircraft
A microlight aircraft, or ultralight, is a small, lightweight flying machine. People typically use these aircraft for recreational flying, training, or aerial observation.
Key Features of a Microlight
These aircraft are significantly lighter than conventional planes. Their maximum take-off weight usually ranges between 450 and 600 kilograms, depending on local regulations.
They have a small capacity, typically carrying just one or two people. The design is often simple, featuring a fabric wing and a small, efficient engine.
Microlights fly at lower speeds compared to regular aeroplanes. They also require a very short take-off and landing distance, using small airstrips.
Types of Microlight Aircraft
Several distinct types of microlight aircraft exist. Fixed-wing microlights resemble small aeroplanes with rigid wings.
Weight-shift microlights, also called trikes, feature a hang-glider style wing. They have a small engine and a wheeled carriage mounted below.
Powered parachutes use a parachute-like canopy attached to a motorised frame. Each type offers a different flying experience.
Common Uses for Microlights
Pilots use microlights for a variety of purposes. Recreational flying remains the most popular use for these aircraft.

Flight schools also use them for basic pilot training. Their slow speed makes them ideal for aerial photography and agricultural observation.
Tourism operators frequently use microlights for sightseeing flights. They offer a unique and intimate view of the landscape below.
Their lightweight construction makes them cheaper to buy and operate. However, they are also much more sensitive to weather conditions like strong winds.
