A prominent Ghanain politician, Hon Kennedy Agyapong has lost an $18m Court case against Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremyaw Anas.
Multiple sources from New Jersey and a Court document revealed that the lawyers for the Politician pleaded for a reduction in the amount but was rejected. They said the amount was “excessive and shocked judicial conscience”.
The Ghanaian journalist, sued Hon Agyapong and one Frederick Asamoah, a social media personality due to a broadcast made on Facebook with Ghanaian residents in the U.S as the main audience.
Anas and his lawyers described the post and commentary with its contents as defamatory hence the suit.
The incident in contention occurred in 2021. The suit was filed in the Essex County Superior Court in the United States in May 2022.
Earlier in January 2023 however, Anas lost a similar defamation case against the former Member of Parliament in an Accra High Court.
That case involved an amount of GHC 25m.
Lawyers for Kennedy Agyapong however pleaded that the said amount was “excessive and shocked judicial conscience”.
The plea was however rejected by the Court.
