The Ministry of Roads and Highways has stated that road and bridge tolls will be re-introduced on Ghana’s Highways.
This the Ministry said is to generate revenue for road maintenance and related matters.
This time however, the collection procedure, as espoused by the Ministry will be a modern, and technologically-driven toll system.
On January 1, 2022, Road Minister, Hon Amoako-Attah suspended road toll collection in Ghana.
The decision to order the immediate cessation of the collection of tolls on all public roads was due to chaos at the various toll booths following the announcement by the Finance Minister. This is according to the former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu.
The Finance Minister at that time, Ken Ofori-Attah said although the government needs such revenue to fix roads in the country, it has observed that toll booths are doing more harm than good, causing heavy traffic and impacting negatively on productivity.
He said “To address these challenges, the government has abolished all tolls on public roads and bridges. This takes effect immediately after the budget is approved,”
To re-introduce the road tolls, the Mahama led government has stated that “the Ministry will employ an open, transparent, competitive, cost-effective and fair procurement process.
