Damage Found on the Statue of President Akufo-Addo in Sekondi-Takoradi
In the past, some Takoradi locals pledged to demolish the statue of President Nana Akufo-Addo that stands in front of the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi, Western Region.
This was to express their displeasure over the deplorable state of the twin city. Residents have complained for years about the poor state of their roads and lack of infrastructure.
Given that a part of the statue has been discovered to be damaged, it appears that this promise has only partially been fulfilled. At the rear of one of the statue’s legs, an obvious, wide hole was found on the morning of Monday, December 16, 2024. It is still unknown whether the damage was the consequence of a construction flaw or intentional—caused by persons who opposed the statue.
“I’m shocked. In order to preserve the president’s memory, this was done. “I haven’t seen anyone say he or she intends to destroy it, but I am surprised that one of its legs is broken,” said homeowner Doris Arhin. I believe that the statue’s flaws stem from its hasty completion; it was expected to take two months, but it took two weeks. Esther Anosi, a different resident, stated, “I believe the authorities had a good reason for making this statue.” President Nana Akufo-Addo showed off the monument at the gate to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi as part of his pre-general election tour to the area.
Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, the Western Regional Minister, stated that the statue was built to commemorate a number of significant regional projects that were started under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, such as the Takoradi Market Circle renovation, the construction of the three-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
In the coming few days, the reason for the damaged statue may be revealed
