The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The arrest followed his appearance at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters on Tuesday, May 27, where he had gone to assist with an ongoing investigation.

After concluding his session with the CID, Wontumi was reportedly taken into custody by EOCO officials as he attempted to leave the premises. The exact reason for his arrest remains unclear, though sources suggest it may be linked to allegations of illegal mining activities.

Reports indicate that Wontumi is being investigated for his alleged involvement in illegal mining (galamsey) within a forest reserve, a charge that has not been officially confirmed by authorities. Illegal mining has been a major concern for the Ghanaian government, with several high-profile figures facing scrutiny over their alleged roles in the environmentally destructive practice. EOCO, which handles economic and organized crime cases, has not yet released an official statement detailing the grounds for Wontumi’s arrest.

The arrest has sparked mixed reactions among political circles, with some NPP members expressing surprise while others downplay its significance. Wontumi, an influential figure within the ruling party, has previously faced legal challenges but has maintained his innocence in all cases. His detention comes at a time when the government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, raising questions about potential political ramifications ahead of future elections.

As the situation develops, many are awaiting further details from EOCO and the CID regarding the specifics of the case. Legal analysts suggest that if the allegations are proven, Wontumi could face serious charges under Ghana’s mining and environmental laws.

Meanwhile, his supporters have called for due process, emphasizing the need for transparency in the investigation. The case continues to draw public attention as authorities work to address the persistent issue of galamsey in the country
