Netanyahu Posts Video to Quash Death Rumours
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a video of himself on Sunday after rumors of his death circulated on social media
In the video, the Prime Minister is seen drinking coffee while chatting with his aide.
Iranian state media aired rumours that he was dead or injured in a an airstrike. An image that has now been detected as generated by AI was widely circulated to justify the claim. The false claims spread quickly online throughout Iran.

The video shows Netanyahu at a cafe in Jerusalem’s outskirts. His aide asks him directly about the bizarre rumours circulating online.
Netanyahu responds with a clever pun on the word “dead.” In Hebrew slang, it can mean “being crazy about” something.
“I’m crazy about coffee,” Netanyahu tells his aide playfully. “You know what? I’m crazy about my people.”
The video’s location has been verified by various sources using file imagery of the cafe. The interiors matched perfectly with the footage shown online.
The date was verified from multiple videos and photos. Additionally, the cafe posted Netanyahu’s visit on Sunday, confirming the timing.
Context of the Conflict
The U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. Since then, Netanyahu has visited towns hit by Iranian missiles.
He also toured a hospital, port, and military bases recently. However, media had little to no access to these visits.
His office distributed videos of these appearances instead. Netanyahu rarely gives interviews to Israeli press or holds news conferences.

He convened his first press conference via video link on Thursday. This format mirrors the one he used in June.
That was during Israel’s 12-day war with Iran previously. As usual, emergency safety restrictions remain in place since the war began.
The rules ban public gatherings across most of Israel. Therefore, schools remain shut, and most people stay close to shelters.
The ‘Sixth Finger’ Conspiracy
Social media buzzed with rumours in recent days. Users claimed an Iranian missile strike killed Netanyahu.
The rumour apparently originated from a press conference screenshot. Users claimed it was a deepfake generated by artificial intelligence.
They pointed to an apparent ‘sixth finger’ on his right hand. The bizarre detail fuelled widespread speculation online.

The ‘sixth finger’ claims quickly gained traction across social platforms. Users speculated that his public appearance was entirely fabricated.
Netanyahu shared two videos from the cafe in response. He joked about “dying” for a coffee in the clips.
He also showed both hands clearly with five fingers. However, his response did little to quash the online rumours.

Many social media users scrutinised the videos closely. They asserted these clips were also AI-generated fakes.
They claimed to see inaccuracies in his coffee cup. Others pointed to inconsistencies with his wedding ring. However, the video has also been fact checked as acurate.
