Korle Bu Crisis: Residents Speak Truth to Power, Demand Systemic Reform

The Emergency Medicine Residents of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) have stepped forward to set the public record straight concerning patients lying on the floor.

They are not just defending their integrity; instead, they are exposing the raw, unfiltered reality of a national healthcare system buckling under immense pressure.

The medical staff’s response, issued on March 23, 2026, directly challenges the hospital management’s prior narrative.

Furthermore, it shifts the focus from a simple administrative dispute to a desperate call for comprehensive, systemic reform.

The doctors are forcing a necessary conversation about the future of emergency care in Ghana.

Setting the Record Straight on the Floor Incident

First and foremost, the residents confirm that the viral video footage depicting patients receiving care on the floor is, in fact, authentic.

They argue that characterizing this documentation as “AI-generated” or “media slander” is not only factually inaccurate but also a profound affront to both the suffering patients and the dedicated staff.

Specifically, the residents detail a tragic sequence of events: when the surge in patients exhausted all available beds, chairs were provided.

However, when those chairs were also filled, the clinical team had no remaining option. Therefore, patients received care on the floor, a decision driven by necessity, not negligence. This sequence, they emphasize, was witnessed by every member of the clinical team on duty.

Beyond the Headlines: Why 200 Beds Are Not Enough

Moreover, the residents address the management’s recent procurement of 200 new beds. While acknowledging the acquisition, they argue that it misses the point entirely. After all, beds without the essential infrastructure to support them are merely obstacles.

In active terms, they explain that these new beds congest an already overwhelmed space. They do not solve the core problem because they lack:

· Functional oxygen points

· Essential airway equipment

· Adequate monitoring tools

· Sufficient floor space to operate

· Appropriate nursing and physician staffing ratios

Transitioning to the solution, the residents assert that what is needed is a comprehensive, resourced plan, not headline-grabbing figures.

A bed alone does not save a life; rather, it is the ecosystem of support around it that does.

A National Crisis, Not a KBTH Problem

Perhaps most critically, the residents reframe this issue as a symptom of a fractured national emergency response system. They boldly state that the crisis at Korle Bu is not an isolated incident but rather the inevitable result of systemic failures.

Three key dysfunctions:

1. Dysfunctional Referral Pathways: Primary and secondary facilities are unable to hold patients. Consequently, they “dump” critically ill individuals onto tertiary centres like KBTH, which are then forced to operate beyond capacity.

2. Absent Pre-Hospital Coordination: Patients frequently arrive critically ill with no advance notice. Additionally, they arrive without basic interventions initiated, meaning the emergency team must start from zero under extreme pressure.

3. No National Bed-Tracking System: Because there is no real-time system for patient redistribution, hospitals cannot balance loads. Hence, one facility becomes paralyzed while others may have available resources.

The Call for a Strengthened Healthcare Grid

Moving forward, the residents make their demand crystal clear. They are not calling for more beds in hallways.

Instead, they are calling for a strengthened national healthcare grid.

They urge the hospital management and the Ministry of Health to move past public relations-focused responses.

They demand a commitment to transparent and systemic reform. The evidence, they argue, is real. The crisis is real. Therefore, the response must be equally real.
