In the December 7th election, President Mahama won by securing 56.6 percent of the total votes cast as against Vice president Bawumia’s 41.6 percent. Statistics so far shows that the percentage obtained by John Mahama is the largest ever seen in Ghana’s voting history obtained by any presidential candidate.
His swearing in at this time makes him the 6th president under the 4th Republic. The President is currently 65 years of age.
As a major part of the ceremony, the president took the oath of allegiance and the presidential oath to officially take over Ghana’s governance of the 4th Republic.
This term’s presidential race and swearing in ceremony marks another history of Ghana registering a first female vice president.
The President and vice President were both sworn in by Chief Justice of Ghana Getrude Torkonoo “in parliament” at the Black Star Square.
President John Mahama has also made another history by being the first to lose an election but return to win thereafter.
President Mahama took over the presidency from Nana Akuffo Addo who enjoyed an 8 year reign. Mr Mahama in his speech highlighted the special bond and mutual respect he shares with the outgoing president.
Of the outgoing president, John Mahama said “While we belong to opposing political parties, we shared a sense of mutual respect… You have, without exception, been a worthy opponent,” he said. He recounted their parallel political journeys that began in Parliament in 1996, adding, “Somehow, it seems fitting that it is with Nana Akufo-Addo that I twice shared this stage and this unique historical distinction.”
Th president thanked Ghanaians and acknowledged the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to tackle economic challenges, strengthen public health, amplified the importance of inclusivity and gender representation and above all reiterated his commitment towards the 24 hour economy.
He finally urged all Ghanaians to unite in a call for action in building a prosperous Ghana for the future.
