Reports from Athens, Greece indicate that one of its mots luxurious Islands (Santorini) and tourist destination has been hit by several earthquakes.
So far, over 200 earthquakes have been recorded between Santorini and Amorgos all in the Aegean Sea with some measuring a magnitude of 4.6.
Authorities closed schools on Monday to ensure public safety. Ferries could seen at the ports evacuating tourists and inhabitants from the Island.
Greece’s largest airline, Aegean Airlines announced two additional flights on Monday and on Tuesday to assist in evacuating tourists and residents form the Island.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told reporters “We are dealing with a very intense geological phenomenon. I want to ask the islanders to remain calm,”
The Island sits on heavy Hellenic Arc, hence prone to earthquakes. That notwithstanding, Santorini has about 20,000 permanent residents and receives over 3.4 million visitors every year
