BAGRE Dam Spillage Rescheduled to Monday
Bagre Dam-Authorities have announced a rescheduling of the planned water spillage from the BAGRE Dam, with the new operation now set to commence on Monday, 25th August 2025.

Why The Spillage
The decision, made by the dam’s management in conjunction with national water resource agencies, is a critical annual measure to prevent the reservoir from exceeding its safe holding capacity following the seasonal rainfall.

This strategic release is essential to maintain the structural integrity of the dam but necessitates widespread awareness and preparation for communities downstream along the White Volta and its tributaries.
Necessity Of Spillage
The controlled spillage is a necessary procedure to manage the water level of the massive reservoir, ensuring it operates within safe limits to avoid an uncontrolled and catastrophic breach. By gradually releasing excess water, engineers can mitigate the risks of flooding directly at the dam site while carefully managing the flow into the river systems.
However, even a controlled release significantly increases water volume and flow speed downstream. This poses substantial risks of flooding to low-lying farms, settlements, and infrastructure. The change in date provides an updated timeline for all stakeholders to finalise their preparedness protocols.
Caution To Residents
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) urgently re-issued advisories to all residents. Particularly to residents in flood-prone areas, instructing them to relocate to higher ground and secure their property and livestock. It strongly advises farmers to harvest any vulnerable crops before the stipulated date.
Local National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) units and emergency services are now on high alert. This involves monitoring the situation and preparing to respond to any incidents.
“We encourage the public to heed all official warnings and stay tuned to local news channels for further updates. This coordinated effort will preserve life and minimize property damage during this essential operation.”
