Chaos erupted during the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North after unidentified assailants stormed a polling station, violently assaulting NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived in a coordinated manner, causing panic among voters and electoral officials and forcing a temporary suspension of voting. Despite heightened security across the constituency’s 19 polling stations, police were unable to prevent the attack or swiftly restore order, raising concerns about electoral safety.
Nana Akua Afriyie and Hawa Koomson sustained injuries in the attack, sparking outrage among NPP supporters over the apparent security failure. The rerun, a closely contested race between the NPP’s Afriyie and the NDC’s Awurabena Aubynn, has been marred by tensions, with this incident further escalating fears of political violence. Authorities are under pressure to investigate the assault and ensure the election proceeds peacefully.
