On Sunday, August 3, 2025, a devastating fire broke out near the Madina Redco Flats, engulfing over 50 wooden and metal structures, including makeshift homes and containers.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received an emergency call at 12:36 p.m., with the first responders from the Madina Fire Station arriving within minutes. Reinforcements from Legon, Abelempke, and GNFS Headquarters brought the total response to five fire engines.

While firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which reportedly started at a washing bay, many families were displaced, losing their homes and belongings. The GNFS has since urged residents to adhere to fire safety measures and report hazards promptly.

Amid the chaos, a separate but related incident unfolded when an unidentified gunman opened fire, injuring at least seven people.

According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the shooting occurred during the fire outbreak, with victims sustaining various injuries. Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, confirmed that the injured are receiving medical treatment while authorities work to apprehend the suspect. The police have increased patrols in the area to maintain order and prevent further violence, appealing to the public for information to aid investigations.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the gunman, locally known as “Area,” fired indiscriminately with a pump-action shotgun.

One victim, Ernest Opare, recounted being shot in the forehead, back, and buttocks, alleging that police officers present failed to intervene.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and it is yet to be confirmed whether the suspect has been arrested. Meanwhile, firefighters successfully contained the fire, though the damage was extensive, leaving many residents homeless and in need of assistance.

Authorities have launched parallel investigations into both the fire and the shooting, with the GNFS examining the cause of the blaze and the police pursuing the gunman.

The incidents have raised concerns over public safety and emergency response protocols in high-risk areas. The police have warned against exploiting emergencies to commit crimes, vowing to prosecute offenders.

Residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant, cooperate with security personnel, and report suspicious activities as recovery efforts continue.
