Major Raid in Kumasi Exposes Human Trafficking Ring Masquerading as Employment
In a significant crackdown on organized crime, Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has announced the arrest of 320 people in Kumasi.
The operation, which targeted a fraudulent scheme operating under the name “ONET,” is being hailed as the largest anti-human trafficking operation in the country’s history. The successful raid demonstrates a critical step forward in the nation’s fight against complex economic crimes that exploit vulnerable populations seeking employment opportunities.
Initial assessments by authorities have revealed a disturbing distinction among those detained. While 320 individuals were initially taken into custody, a mere 25 are considered potential suspects. The remaining 295 are believed to be victims of sophisticated human trafficking and employment scams. This highlights a growing trend where criminal enterprises use the guise of legitimate online work to lure, traffic, and defraud innocent people, trapping them in exploitative situations.
The operation was the result of meticulous, months-long investigations by EOCO’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit. In a coordinated effort, officers carried out simultaneous raids at two separate locations to dismantle the network. EOCO has also confirmed it is working directly with the legitimate ONET organization to clamp down on the misuse of its brand name.
